City Council
Agenda — 1 item
- Jefferson School Update. The City Council created a Jefferson School Ad Hoc Committee in 2024 to meet cooperatively with representatives of the School District to discuss the future of Jefferson School. The request to discuss Jefferson School was initiated by the School District in late 2024, by School Superintendent Bob Jaszczak in a meeting with staff. Council President Beise appointed Council members Janie Farrar and Becky Norton to the Jefferson School Ad Hoc Committee in 2024. They met once to discuss options.Internally, staff, including representatives of Community Development, Community Engagement Facilitator Michelle Leise, and HRA Director Kurt Keena, met to explore options. A follow up meeting was held in early 2025 with the Ad Hoc Committee appointed by Council President Farrar. The 2025 Ad Hoc Committee includes Council members Kliewer and Norton. The school district has specifically requested the City Council consider:1. The City to purchase Jefferson School and develop it. 2. The City to purchase the park area on the half block upon which Jefferson School sits. 3. The City to assist the School District with developing an RFP to advertise the sale of the property (once the decision is made regarding the park area). Another issue has been raised in 2025 related to the City’s interest in owning the Prairie Island Ice Arena. Multiple Council members/Mayor Iocco were individually asked to consider this. In order to address this, Council President Farrar, Mayor Iocco, Council Vice President Kliewer, and members of the School Board Ad Hoc Committee met with the School District on February 11 to discuss. The fourth item to discuss is:4. Will the City consider owning the Prairie Island Ice Arena. Council President Farrar will ask the City Council to discuss all of these options on Saturday, February 22, and has asked for the issue to be added to the March 10 City Council meeting for a decision. The School District is interested in moving forward with a sale of Jefferson School, and would appreciate a timely response.
