- 8 Commissioner Cleveland presented a resolution for the record outlining the process for appointing a successor to serve the remainder of the unexpired term as Cleveland County Sheriff. The Board of County Commissioners intends to ensure a fair and transparent application process to select a qualified candidate. The application period will open immediately and remain available until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Applications may be submitted either to the Commissioners’ office or through the Cleveland County Job Opportunity Page, where applicants can access the necessary forms and submit any required supporting materials. All submitted applications will be forwarded to legal counsel, who will compile them into uniform packets for each Commissioner. Each packet will include an acknowledgment sheet for Commissioners to initial, confirming receipt. These packets will be distributed and completed by Friday, May 15, 2026. The review of applications and selection of candidates for interviews will take place May 25–26, with the Chairman calling any necessary special meetings for interviews. These interviews will be conducted in executive session, and the final appointment will be made in an open meeting following the completion of all interviews. Commissioner Cleveland made a motion to approve the resolution regarding the application process for the vacant position, which was seconded by Vice Chairman Rusty Grissom. The motion carried by the following vote: Aye: 3 - Chairman McHughes; Vice Chairman Grissom; and Member Cleveland

- 9 Commissioner Cleveland discussed that the Board will work diligently to select a qualified replacement as do applicants will be vetted and hopes to have the process completed within sixty days. Commissioner Grissom emphasized that this is a significant decision for the Board and stressed the importance of selecting the most qualified individual for the position. He noted that the Board has a responsibility to help restore trust in Cleveland County and, above all, to ensure responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
