- 5 a. General Updates Community Recreation Director Fred Couceyro began by discussing the lack of quorum in recent meetings stating that this is mainly due to two seats that have still not been filled. Director Couceyro stated that due to lack of quorum they cannot appoint anyone to the board-as-a-whole seat at this meeting. he then stated that he was going to reach out to the City Clerk’s office to inquire about board member Gerardo Alvarez who was recently appointed but has not attended a board meeting yet. Board members Judith “Jude” Alexander and Julian Sevillano then voiced two candidates that they would like to recommend for the board-as-a-whole seat. Board member Judith “Jude” Alexander then introduced her candidate, Olga Girod who introduced herself to the board and discussed why she was interested in becoming a member. Board member Julian Sevillano then stated that he also has a candidate that he would like to nominate, Dr. Canton. Director Couceyro recommended that both candidates apply for the board online and reach out to the City Clerk’s office to see if Commissioner Castro may be interested in appointing one of them as she has still not appointed anyone into her seat on the board. AAC Manager Gavarrete began by providing a maintenance update on the AAC, stating that Media Library construction project, stating that a contractor had been selected to complete the floor and was just awaiting a finalized PO to begin. Director Couceyro then stated that the AAC had recently removed paper towels from the restrooms as they were considered the cause of the last stoppage at the AAC following the plumbing repairs. Norma then stated that the ceiling leaks had been repaired by The Palace and the ceiling patched. AAC Manager Norma Gavarrete then discussed AAC special events, starting with the Quinceanera + Celebration on August 1st noting that the dance floor and DJ made a big difference getting participants up and dancing, however while sacrificing the number of participants there can be. Norma then shared that the next couple events would be hosted at the AAC including Senior Week and the Western Roundup. Norma then discussed the upcoming A Saturday at the Cinema showing on September 27th showing “A Hard Day’s Night” at 11am and that they are working on finalizing an AARP Safe Driver’s Course on August 30th. Board member Judith “Jude” Alexander then inquired about possibly having the artwork organized by category to make judging easier, following discussion it was decided that the AAC Supervisors would work on creating a more organized flow however they weren’t sure how much this would be possible. AAC Manager Norma Gavarrete then mentioned with Senior Week coming up the AAC would like to have the board represented using an outreach table offering the board members to share what days and time they wanted to have the outreach table. Following discussion, it was decided that there would be a table available throughout the week for whenever a board member would like to come in and represent the board. b. Special Events Senor Week from Monday August 18th-Friday August 22nd, the Western Roundup on Friday September 19th, the September A Saturday at the Cinema showing “A Hard Day’s Night”, the Halloween Spooktacular on Friday October 24th, and the October A Saturday at the Cinema showing “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”. c. Administrative Updates Community Recreation Director Fred Couceyro began by discussing park openings that are set for the upcoming months including Dorothy Thompson Park and Blue Road Park along with a community meeting to discuss renovations at Ponce Circle Park. Director Couceyro then provided an update on the Underline projects including the dog park, fitness park and a Pickleball court. Director Couceyro continued to provide an update on ongoing projects including the Granada golf shelters, Biltmore Pickleball courts, and Phillips Park which is set to break ground in the next couple months. He then discussed the Venetian Pool project stating that they were given the impression that the projects there could be completed by October, stating that they have decided to keep the Pool open throughout the Winter season. Director Couceyro then stated that the Country Club director has resigned so they are beginning the search for a new director, stating that he will be covering the position in the meantime. He then mentioned the Fourth of July stating that despite the weather leading to a smaller crowd than usual the overall event went very well including the new addition of drones. Director Couceyro then discussed the budget meetings, stating that there is a lot of discussion taking place and that the department is hopeful that they will receive the additional funds needed heading into the next fiscal year.
