PUBLIC ARTS FUND UPDATE FOR FISCAL YEAR 2017-2018 AND 2018-2019 Sponsors: Staff, Alan Carvalho, Sue Townsley Background: Provided is a spreadsheet summarizing the expenditures for Fiscal Year 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. Currently the Finance Department estimates that the public arts fund will have a balance of $442,000 for 2018-2019 which means $132,000 can be allocated towards art educational programs/events. The Finance Department is currently closing out fiscal year 2017-2018 and once the audit is completed at the end of the month, they will be able to confirm the actual budget for 2018-2019. DATA FALL PROGRAM AT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB Sponsors: Alan Carvalho, Sue Townsley Background: The Boys and Girls Club is requesting funding in the amount of $2,000 to continue the partnership with Cathedral City High School DATA program and the Boys and Girls Club. The program would involve the Cathedral City High School DATA students, under the supervision of a teacher, to mentor kids at the Boys and Girls facility in Cathedral City. At the June 11, 2018 meeting, the Commission approved the allocation of $2,000 to sponsor the month-long summer program. After the success of the summer program, the Boys and Girls Club would like to continue the program this fall. Two days a week for 12 weeks, September 26, 2018 – December 13, 2018. Funding Source: Art Education (estimate of $132,000 available) Recommendation: Motion to approve the Public Arts Commission sponsorship of the DATA 2018 Fall Program at the Boys and Girls Club in the amount of $2,000 from the Public Arts Educational Fund. ▶ jump to 13:22

COACHELLA VALLEY REPERTORY (CVREP) Sponsors: Alan Carvalho, Christian Sesma Background: The Coachella Valley Repertory (CVREP) is requesting funding in the amount of $2,401.30 to continue the partnership between CVREP, Cathedral City High School drama class and the Public Arts Commission to host 2 educational classes benefiting students of Cathedral City High School. The dollar amount for funding is based on the Board of Educators hourly wage paid to teachers for after school programs. At the February 2018 meeting, the Commission approved the allocation of $2,331.36 to sponsor the eight-week program benefiting Cathedral City High School drama classes. After the success of the program, CVREP is requesting to continue the program by offering two educational classes over an eight-week period from October 15 thru December 10, 2018. Funding Source: Art Education (estimate of $132,000 available) Recommendation: Motion to approve the Public Arts Commission sponsorship of the Coachella Valley Repertory’s Conservatory eight-week educational program benefiting Cathedral City High School drama classes in the amount of $2,401.30 from the Public Arts Educational fund. ▶ jump to 18:08

CATHEDRAL CITY’S GOT TALENT Sponsors: Wendy Willson, Denise Rodriguez Bowman Background: The Cathedral City Evening Rotary Club proposes to partner with the Public Arts Commission and Cathedral City Library to sponsor Cathedral City’s Got Talent contest for members of our community of all ages. The Rotary submitted a proposal indicating that they needed $1,500 to kick off the program. Funding Source: Art Education (estimate of $132,000 available) Recommendation: Motion to approve $1,500 in funding to support the Cathedral City’s Got Talent contest in partnership with the Cathedral City Evening Rotary and Cathedral City Library. ▶ jump to 22:13

KELSEY MONTAGUE MURAL Sponsors: Staff, request by Mary Pickford Theatre Background: Kelsey Montague is the inspiring international female street artist / author behind the #WHATLIFTSYOU movement. Kelseys murals invite people into the piece itself and encourage them to share their experience online in a way that inspires others. The artist is currently in talks with the City of Palm Springs and City of Palm Desert to place a mural in downtown Palm Springs and El Paseo. The Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City is requesting to partner with the Public Arts Commission to fund and install a mural at the theatre.   13. 6. PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION BROCHURE Sponsors: Alan Carvalho, Sue Townsley Background: The sponsors have created a draft promotional brochure for the Public Arts Commission. Brochures would be available to the public at City Hall, the Chamber and Library. The sponsors are requesting funds in the amount of $355.88 to print 1,000 brochures. Funding Source: Art Education (estimate of $132,000 available) Recommendation: Motion to approve the Public Arts Commission brochure and to allocate $355.88 from the Public Arts Educational fund towards the cost to print 1,000 brochures for public distribution. ▶ jump to 34:15
  14. 7. REVIEW SUBCOMMITTEES Sponsors: Staff, Alan Carvalho, Sue Townsley Background: Subcommittees are created to assist the Commission with the development of programs. Recommendation: Review current subcommittee list and request changes if needed. ▶ jump to 39:34
  15. 8. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD) Sponsors: Staff, Alan Carvalho, Sue Townsley Background: The City of Cathedral City has historically funded this event at $5,000 annually. This year the City reduced funding to $2,500. The sponsors would like the Commission to consider increasing the public arts support of this event by allocating $2,500 towards the event. The event promotes art education by offering art educational booths at the event. At the February 12, 2018 meeting, the Commission approved $575 towards the prizes given to the winners of the art contest.
